Honestly the longer I think about it the harder it is not to be pissed at RBG for not retiring in 2013 Like the nicest thing you can say about her decision is she was wildly overoptimistic

The Republicans controlled the Senate then, too. What kind of nominee do you think Obama could have gotten? Also, this sounds a lot like blaming one woman when the reality is, we've got way more men to blame

The loudest calls for her to retire were in 2013, when the Democrats held a 55-seat majority that many people - correctly - were afraid they would lose in the 2014 midterms

I do not doubt that it's quite likely anyone Obama nominated in 2013 would be less skilled, less charismatic, and more politically moderate than Ginsburg However, they would 1) be a solid vote against overturning Roe v. Wade and 2) be very unlikely to suddenly die in 2020

I‘m not big on blaming a woman who was incredibly good at her job for not retiring rather than blaming the laziness of voters for letting Obama & the rest of us down for blowing off midterms. Also ahead of RBG in a blame line are those who ignored the known risk to SCOTUS in 16.

Actually, no You know what, I'm putting my foot down about this narrative It is fucking bullshit to say shit like this, like a leader isn't responsible for what happens if the voters let them down A leader who thinks like that has totally abdicated their responsibility

That is a fine opinion. I disagree and I am not willing to once again give voters who are told the very specific risks and choose to ignore them a free pass. You are quick to hold a “leader” responsible, which I don’t disagree with, but citizens have responsibilities as well.

Who the fuck cares Yeah there's a lot of people to be mad at But, crucially, being mad at someone on your team for *fucking up* and *losing* is very different than being mad at the *other* team for *winning*

I assume a lot of the nonvoters or R voters just don't give a shit about Roe v. Wade or the ACA or anything else that will be destroyed under the new court Maybe that's foolish for them personally and maybe it's not, I don't know their situation

They suck and they're my enemy, but it's not the same as someone who claimed to be a passionate fighter for those causes, who still gets lionized as such, who made one very specific and obvious bad decision that allowed those causes to go down in flames
