Honestly the longer I think about it the harder it is not to be pissed at RBG for not retiring in 2013 Like the nicest thing you can say about her decision is she was wildly overoptimistic

To be fair, the filibuster on SCOTUS nominees was still in place, so there is some blame to assign to Harry Reid, who could have removed it but didn't (or didn't announce that he would, anyway). But RBG could always make her retirement conditional on a replacement.

I'm just really frustrated with what seems like a general insistence that *nobody* fucked up and that Democratic leaders cannot ever fail, only be failed by voters just stubbornly voting the wrong way

Because they can just remove the filibuster by a procedural vote They had JUST DONE THAT for the lower courts that same year, and McConnell did it for the SCOTUS in 2017
