Honestly the longer I think about it the harder it is not to be pissed at RBG for not retiring in 2013 Like the nicest thing you can say about her decision is she was wildly overoptimistic

She is not responsible for the decision of McConnell to not put Garland up for a vote. Stop it.

Oh come on, seriously None of us are responsible for the evil actions of other people but we're responsible for what we do to respond to them That's what the term "responsibility" means

So, she should have "responded" to his action before it happened? I am fully aware of what responsibility means. She could not have predicted what McConnell would do - nor is she responsible for his actions.

She could and should have predicted it was POSSIBLE Because it obviously WAS possible, because it's what happened And if she cared as much about her judicial legacy as all that she should've prepared to protect it from the worst case scenario

She couldn't have predicted Scalia would die when he did either; that's not even the seat at issue here. The only thing she had to know was that she was, herself, mortal, and that Democrats wouldn't have the presidency and the Senate forever.

RBG's game plan was really obviously based on taking a bunch of 80% chances - or, hell, 60% chances - and treating them like 100% chances Treat it as a certainty Scalia will die first, Obama will push a moderate through, then Hillary will win the election and retake the Senate

And betting on everything going right for this picture-perfect finish - the Notorious RBG retiring after a record-setting career and having her replacement named by the first woman President But if anything goes wrong in that chain it leads to cascading disaster

It's the kind of thing where you'd go "Hey she's got style" if she were a high stakes professional poker player but not if she's gambling with people's lives and the future of the republic

I don't even think it's that. I think her plan was to be on the bench until she died, regardless of the consequences. It was her seat, and she viewed it as a job, not a political position. And the plan worked for her; she did, in fact, serve until she died.
