By the time of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings the Japanese forces had withdrawn to the Home Islands and their captive populations liberated By contrast, in the West, the Final Solution kept on chugging along and the smoke from the crematoria kept rising till the war's end

If the Rape of Nanking were still going on in 1945 and the nuking of the Home Islands could've played any role in stopping it, I would feel very differently about the A-bombs (And, as someone whose paternal grandparents were from Nanking, this is personal)

Oh yeah the postwar claims of German adult civilians that they had no idea the Holocaust was going on just up the road from them did ring pretty hollow, certainly. Does that justify burning them and their children alive?

Dresden wasn't a judicial punishment, it was an act of war intended to disrupt the German war machine and break the morale of the populace in order to hasten surrender On those utilitarian grounds, it was justified

I would say the biggest difference is that the nuclear bombs essentially happened after the war was over. We could have feasibly negotiated a surrender and ended the frigging thing, but instead we bombed folks. This goes double for the second bomb after the first was dropped.

Overlooked fact about German death camps: the better example would be the camp in Weimar. A still successful act of propaganda was, that they called it "Buchenwald", a fantasy name. "Weimar" would have made it obvious, that one of the biggest death camps was in walking distance1/2

Thuringia has a vivid memorial culture. Saxony, on the other hand, spends most of the state allocations on crying about the GDR, while Buchenwald's largest external satellite camp was in Leipzig. What's on the premises right now, you may ask? A Nazi free fight and concert area.
