I was raised on the idea of threadbare aristocrats, with the "good" families beggared by the war. And some of mine was. But in general the folks who ran things before the war ran things after the war. And once Reconstruction was over they settled in to reconstruct slavery.

Southern Gothic was great stuff, and it was about the original sin of slavery that had corrupted the society, but Faulkner, Tennessee, and them also sold the threadbare aristocrat trope.
