I mean, they set up a pretty brutal theocracy that ended up hanging a bunch of people for being witches, so... yeshttps://twitter.com/Itsjoeco/status/1322302638470402050 …

I think the Virginia Company is probably a more apt comparison, though crossing a sea to exploit a land for profit hardly makes them more likely to make fair decisions. Like does anyone think Musk is going to give people an equal vote?

Yeah the two main realistic appeals I can think of for taking a one-way trip to live in a space colony for the rest of your life are 1) religious nutjob seeking a "purified" society, or 2) nightmare capitalist seeking unlimited exploitation

Those are basically the two kinds of colonies we had in America

I'm not saying that there's no such thing as genuinely downtrodden poor people seeking to flee to a new land to escape persecution But those generally don't top the list of "official" colony projects, because those people don't have any money

I mean, The people running the projects aren't necessarily the same as the people the colony gets populated with. Like, at the extreme, there's Australia and Georgia's history as penal colonies.

And I've seen it suggested elsewhere that "poor people get pushed into 'newly opened frontiers' [freshly stolen land] as a first wave to soften it up for the ruling class that later comes in and takes over" is a pattern that dates all the way back to the Roman empire.

Like, the 'nightmare capitalist' needs workers to exploit, right?

Sure The issue is that OP was not defending the basic human rights of all the people in a hypothetical SpaceX Mars colony, but the opposite -- defending the right of the people running the colony to write their own laws without any input from Earth governments

I may have missed the whole Mars context until halfway though writing my replies.
