iirc Hawthorne wrote it as some sort of “familial penance” because his father was one of the judges during that time (although to my understanding, the witch trials were not held under legal courts but under mobs)

Scarlet Letter was one of my favorites. I've been to the House of Seven Gables too, it's around the corner from the Witch Museum in Salem (yes, I grew up here). It's pretty honest that the pilgrims were brutal.
