They weren't fleeing "persecution" as the mythology goes. They left England because they weren't allowed to set their theocracy there and brutalize anyone who disagreed with them. Poor babies.

well, England was *also* a theocracy at this time (under the Anglican church). The Puritans *were* seeking religious freedom; the religious freedom to oppress who they wanted to oppress

I still think about the story of the Puritans who moved to the Netherlands and found they were accepted... but they were very upset because their children weren't growing up English... so they decided to move across the Atlantic so they wouldn't have to assimilate.

Most of the Europeans who came here were fleeing debts, were kicked out for being a problem, or were here specifically for murder and exploitation purposes. Europe did not send its best.

We're taught the pilgrims were persecuted for their beliefs, and they fled to be able to practice their religion in peace. It was a long time before I actually realized that meant not that they were victims but such fanatics even the usually happy to persecute British had enough
