Kidding aside though, you're right: the people matter the most. But I think hatred is a distraction from how to deal with people. It misfires too often.

It's the kind of thing people say inside safe ivory towers Who think that slavery ended because of some kind of abstraction like "industrial capitalism outpacing agrarianism" and not the actual Civil War

And who think of the Civil War itself as an abstraction -- an event -- as opposed to something that only mattered because a whole lot of specific people who supported slavery were shot to pieces and left as food for the worms
