it's fundamentally genocide of an indigenous people and yet also good

I mean I'm being glib but discovering that the Na'vi were real would basically prove misotheism and therefore the only sensible reaction would be to hurt god by annihilating her favorite agents in creation

You're going to have to run that one by me.

The Na'vi are fundamentally proof that God hates humanity and engineered them to fail

but but...panspermia? or even just, like, a contemplative view of god that allows for some time for new info to sink in?

Eywa is textually a god that exists though and therefore, textually a god that must be obliterated

Eywa is more just a bad concept, really.

either way I don't think a god that physically exists on one world is the same kind of thing as a god that might ontologically deserve destruction

The point is within the narrative of the movie Eywa serves the same function as an ineffable Christian God The all-powerful being who capriciously "plucks some flowers and lets others lie", who decides to save Jake Sully's life while letting Grace Augustine die

Isn't that just a case of habitually reading god as small and petty? Like, the biology of Pandora is absurdly powerful but it's not actually a cosmic scale force. In the text isn't this the same as getting pissed at a hospital because somebody died on the operating table?

I dunno, it depends on how conscious you think Eywa is If Eywa is just a random thoughtless magical phenomenon that does things without intention, it's pointless to get mad at it If Eywa has intelligence and personhood on at least the level of a human, she's an asshole

Goodness yes, and the bigger problem is that Eywa is simultaneously ecosystem-spanning and very petty, kind of? it's hard to thread that needle between cosmic force and specific personhood.

Like personifying "Nature" is always kind of a problem, but the Na'vi's issue is they go further and make a clearly capricious & demonstrably indifferent or selfish Nature out to be the Actual Moral Arbiter. It's Red in Tooth and Claw *pretending* to be Cuddly Nature.
