This is something Kim Stanley Robinson did with his future version of the USA in The Wild Shore, and that's actually fairly common with American cyberpunk dystopias (which have tended to play on American fears of obsolescence next to Japan, or China)

Yeah my parents still go on about how “giving” India trains makes up for the Raj. Many people still don’t know about the atrocities of Empire and get very upset at me when I mention them. Which is why being treated as if I’m acting all nationalist here is quite so aggravating.
