I guess this is why they don't make more musicals of Dostoevsky

Hell in the 2012 movie Eponine isn't even really "tomboyish", you just know she's supposed to be the less hot one because she's played by a B-list actress (Samantha Barks) rather than an A-listerpic.twitter.com/ew1NP9atHy

(Rumor has it they did want an A-lister for the part, possibly Taylor Swift, but it fell through so they just got the actor who'd played her in the last West End run)

Oh man I guess they wanted Taylor Swift because she can play skinny and androgynous if you put her in the right clothes But seriously

She is 100% a Cosette, but I guess she can do ragamuffin if she wanted to. Also, I mean, it makes it fairly obvious what they thought the female lead was.

Well she's too tall Cosette is supposed to be tiny and to disappear into Marius' strong arms when he embraces her etc Eponine being all gangly is supposed to be one of her unattractive, masculine traits (YMMV)

You're gonna need a bigger Marius.

Although to be fair, he is a kind of wan slip of a thing, more than a burly leading man type.

And he's also no higher than third-billing among the leading men of that musical. In practice, he's probably fourth, include M. Thenardier as well as Javert and Valjean.

Yeah you have to limit how big anyone else is because Valjean is supposed to be the biggest, it's kind of central to his characterization Like Javert starts to recognize him precisely because there are very few men in the country that big

Ironically if you proposed a trans Eponine, Eddie Redmayne would probably switch to playing her instead of Marius
