(I'm pretty sure that's how there's any research at all -- some of them manage to do themselves enough damage that surgeons have had to give up and amputate the affected limb. Which resolves the BIID. Which seems to indicate that yeah, we COULD save everyone a lot of trouble.)

Severe BIID is rare as shit, but seriously, sufferers are CRIPPLINGLY unhappy. Is amputating a healthy limb anyone's favorite idea? Of course not. But is it really better to have someone die by suicide? PROBABLY NOT.

Sorry, this is kind of a hobbyhorse of mine because BIID is the disorder that transphobes AND EVERYONE ELSE uses as the "these people are obviously too crazy to be indulged" disease, but IT REALLY IS NOT THAT EASY.

JK Rowling was giving away her TERFitude when she has Cormoran Strike, an amputee war veteran, flip the fuck out about encountering a BIID amputee support group As though there actually are enough of them in one country for such a group to exist

And as though anyone cares enough about this issue to write a whole book about it except for TERFs who see BIID as an analogy to trans people

Most people have never heard of BIID.

Yes, but transphobes are FUCKING OBSESSED with it. Again, because it lets them paint trans people as super crazy.

I'm both surprised and unsurprised. I'm more surprised they're aware of it. Was there a program on it on the BBC or something? It's such a rare disorder. I mean I had to go out of my way to find literature (anemic amounts) on it like 15 years ago when I did some research on it.

I don't know how it started but it's a TERF meme now, it's one of their central talking/debating points

Oh yeah, it's definitely on the scripts that they pass around. As to how they became aware of it -- it's occasionally a plot point in various medical procedural shows? I think House might've had an ep of it, and i know Chicago Med did.

Yeah people love to sensationalize this shit Same reason they always have an episode about Munchausen's and/or Munchausen's by proxy
