I guess I have a semantic question. Aren't trans people trans before they realize it, or transition, or come out? So how could the number of trans people change short of "there are more people, some of whom are trans"?

Are people being supportive of trans men? I must have missed it. I agree that there's a fixation on demonizing trans women but I think there's also this accompanying fear that we have to save our "girls" from wanting to take T bc being female is too hard or w/e
