Disulfiram (antabuse) is arguably a physical treatment for a mental disorder, and there are certainly a number of physical interventions in other disorders that originate in the brain like epilepsy and Parkinson's.

You don't need to be a dualist to recognise people can have software or hardware issues

It's not useful EVEN IN COMPUTING past a certain scale, and it certainly isn't useful in brains. Brains don't have "software" and "hardware"; it's all hardware all the way down. Learning causes physical changes in our brains. So does trauma.

The key feature of an artificial computer that makes "software" and "hardware" a meaningful distinction -- the fact that computer memory is highly volatile and "software" can be quickly and easily replaced -- is very obviously false when it comes to the human brain

In the literal sense this is extremely obviously true -- I can't just stick wires to my skull and make a mental clone of myself and put it in someone else's body, much as science fiction writers find the idea fascinating But it's true in the broader sense too

The whole ugly history of people claiming the human mind is infinitely malleable and if you just give people the right classroom lessons and catechisms and books to read etc. you can turn people into whatever you want It's false, it doesn't work

Dualism is wrong It's wrong in both ways -- dualists wildly overestimate how much you can "change people's minds" via "purely mental" means (talking, persuasion, education, etc.) and wildly underestimate how much you can through "physical" means involving non-brain body parts

Wouldn't that say that people are pretty malleable -- it isn't through persuasion, always, but for sure you can torture me into saying that Den Xiaoping is a Disney Princess if you make it painful enough.

it extends to non-nervous body systems too - more and more we’re discovering how large a role the digestive system plays in mood (most of the body’s serotonin is produced by bacteria in the gut, for example)
