Something tells me you are a) thankfully not a medical professional. b) hopefully not a parent.

Disulfiram (antabuse) is arguably a physical treatment for a mental disorder, and there are certainly a number of physical interventions in other disorders that originate in the brain like epilepsy and Parkinson's.

So you be cool with giving an anorexic weight loss surgery? Because you think pandering to the whims of someone who is mentally ill is best medical practice? I think that is unforgivable - and doubly so where a child is concerned.

No, giving an anorexic weight loss surgery doesn't treat their dysphoria and carries a high risk of death, so it's ineffective and harmful as a medical treatment. If someone has depression and asks for an antidepressant "pandering to their whims" is good, same with transition.

Yes, because antidepressants have been widely tested, & are likely to cause minimal harm. Zero surgery is involved and the effects are easily reversible. Transition on the other hand involves major surgery and untested hormones, the effects of which can never be fully reversed.

Fluoxetine, the first SSRI, was introduced in 1987. Many antidepressants are still under patent, so they've only been introduced in the last few years and it's been impossible to know their long-term effects. HRT has been in widespread use for transition since the 70s.

Your posts are very disingenuous. You know that antidepressants don't leave long-lasting consequences once stopped. You know that hormones and surgery do. You are not arguing in good faith.

Lol there are tons of long-term risks associated with antidepressants ESPECIALLY when going off them, this is well known The risk of suicide spikes after a dependency on an SSRI has been developed and the patient tries to taper off, it's what killed David Foster Wallace

DFW was struggling with his antidepressants. The experience of serotonin imbalance is frightening and painful. I know because I went through it. If you've felt it, you'd know why people commit suicide.

I experienced it after only three weeks on generic Prozac (fluoxetine). It doesn't take long. I lost my ability to orgasm and decided that I changed my mind. I went through withdrawal, which causes "suicidal ideation." What it causes is existential pain. It is dangerous.

The idea that going off an antidepressant is harmless is...I don't even know how to categorize how crazy that is. People don't go on them for fun, and they have pretty significant effects going on or off. There's a very good reason you shouldn't use them if you don't need them.
