I mean yes it is true that for most names in English that end in -a you emphasize the second-to-last syllable but there are enough exceptions (Angela, Barbara, Julia) that learning one more shouldn't be that big a deal

Apparently there are different pronunciations—Ms. Marvel’s name is pronounced with the stress on the second syllable, so now my brain tangles them up whenever I come across either.

Well, it's complicated Basically in real life almost everyone you see with the name "Kamala" is going to pronounce it the way Harris does, because it's a common feminine Hindi/Sanskrit name (meaning "lotus")
