I didn't start drinking until late in life, and when I did I started drinking with hard liquor, which is why part of me still has the stereotypical alcoholic's opinion that softer beverages are kind of a waste of time "Beer ain't drinkin"https://twitter.com/AngryBlackLady/status/1319817610842771456 …

This... may be true, I wouldn't know It probably only applies to people who start drinking with the intention of stopping at some point

nah, the point is, if you're already drunk when you start on the hard stuff, it's harder to judge amounts, self-regulate beer by its nature just takes longer to drink the same amount of alcohol--voila, external regulation

All the people I know who say that think that beer and liquor don't mix well because of a (imaginary) physiological reaction. As in, they don't mix them because they think the body doesn't handle both well.

That is a misconception. If you drink beer first in an evening, then switch to hard alcohol, while you're becoming more impaired, you're into less liquid that's more potent, faster. Down shifting from liquor to beer usually means its harder to get 10 shots in during last call.
