I have never actually felt visceral disgust as a reaction—the monkey brain scene from TEMPLE OF DOOM never did anything for me—and I don't necessarily respect other people's sense of visceral disgust So if you're going to build a case against something, you need to prove harm

It's interesting because all that stuff about moral framework theory says that disgust is a key driver of moral intuitions, and the stronger your sense of disgust the more likely you are to be traditionalist and politically conservative

There's quite a bit of research into the psychological basis of political identification that has shown correlations between the strength of disgust reactions and conservative identification. Interestingly, when presented with "disgusting" images, conservatives linger longer.

Right, the way disgust is a love/hate thing, where disgust is a perverse attractant rather than just a repellent Rather than just saying "Get it away from me so I don't have to think about it" the attitude is seek-and-destroy, chasing it to the ends of the earth to eliminate it
