I think the reason for an age of consent is just that, the issue *of consent* - that an adult has so much legal and social power over a minor that a minor cannot meaningfully consent to the consequences of sex with an adult I do NOT think it's a matter of "innocence" and "taint"

A lot of the rhetoric around this presumes that a child is fundamentally "pure", "innocent", basically asexual And that to introduce sexuality into their lives is to "ruin" them, "corrupt" them (the old law is literally called "corruption of minors") I think this is fucked up

It’s not about children being “pure” or “innocent” - it’s about children *not having the capacity to consent*. Children *cannot* consent to sex - not even with each other. Get that through your fucking head. This is basic safeguarding.

Okay so they should be prevented from having sex then right Violation of consent, where I come from, is a big deal, it's a bad thing that should not happen What are you gonna do about it

The usual option is to ensure that they have absolutely no privacy.

Or you can make a somewhat theoretical argument about culpability; as minors, they have no responsibility for anything that they do. It makes sense in a lot of law enforcement contexts, but does not fit well here.

Like I said the last go-round was with MRKHVoice, who started pounding the table and saying the minors are innocent but the parents should be arrested for letting it happen Bunch of very thoughtful policy prescriptions from these folks

So we'd be excusing the criminal behavior on the grounds that the offenders are minors, but god forbid we go without punishing someone?

Yeah it's the idea that any "corruption" of minors indicates a "safeguarding failure" where an adult in charge was either an abuser or criminally negligent

I remember in that particular convo someone talked about tutoring a kid and seeing porn come up on his laptop and red-facedly telling the kid to close the window and keep that stuff in an incognito window And Claire lost her shit and said the kid shoud've been reported to CPS

Someone "sexualized" that kid (who was 13) and the cops needed to be called IMMEDIATELY to find out who the predator was in that house And the tutor by "enabling" the child's "pornographic addiction" was abusing and sexualizing the kid further It was fun times
