I am arguing that "enthusiastic consent workshops" (or if you prefer just "affirmative consent workshops") aimed at minors in the sex ed curriculum of a middle or high school are a vital and necessary tool to help kids stand up for themselves and navigate tense situations

And I am arguing *against* the clique of social conservatives and TERFs who argue that because "children can't consent", any workshop telling children the concept of "consent" applies to them must be a pretext for a pedophile to groom them for sex, and should be shut down

No, that's one of the issues people need to talk and think about with consent, that it's a matter of asymmetrical power dynamics

I do not think that children can consent to sex with adults I don't think that this is because the concept of "consent" doesn't apply to them, I think it's because it DOES apply to them

I think this is a fundamental left/right value split (or liberal/trad value split, or whatever you wanna call it) Rush Limbaugh's horrified "You think *anything* is okay as long as you *consent*" thing

I think the reason for an age of consent is just that, the issue *of consent* - that an adult has so much legal and social power over a minor that a minor cannot meaningfully consent to the consequences of sex with an adult I do NOT think it's a matter of "innocence" and "taint"

A lot of the rhetoric around this presumes that a child is fundamentally "pure", "innocent", basically asexual And that to introduce sexuality into their lives is to "ruin" them, "corrupt" them (the old law is literally called "corruption of minors") I think this is fucked up

The reason there's this huge fucking fight over sex ed that the Baroness is leading is this idea that the natural state of minors is pure, and that if minors are masturbating or thinking about sex or want to have sex with each other or sexual in any sense "someone got to them"

So sex ed that actually talks about the process of having sex ("teaching them techniques", as one of the commenters bitterly snapped) is "corrupting" minors, it's harming them, it's destroying their innocence, etc. I am deeply and implacably opposed to this mindset

I think it does tremendous damage -- damage that, frankly, I'm not sure I've recovered from even now or ever will fully recover from
