It is not *the same* as rape but it is a violation of personal space If it happened to an adult we wouldn't hesitate to call it assault or harassment, if the adult were upset enough about it to bring charges It trains kids to accept violation from loved ones

Okay, did I say it was okay for adults to have sex with children?

I am arguing that "enthusiastic consent workshops" (or if you prefer just "affirmative consent workshops") aimed at minors in the sex ed curriculum of a middle or high school are a vital and necessary tool to help kids stand up for themselves and navigate tense situations

And I am arguing *against* the clique of social conservatives and TERFs who argue that because "children can't consent", any workshop telling children the concept of "consent" applies to them must be a pretext for a pedophile to groom them for sex, and should be shut down

No, that's one of the issues people need to talk and think about with consent, that it's a matter of asymmetrical power dynamics

I do not think that children can consent to sex with adults I don't think that this is because the concept of "consent" doesn't apply to them, I think it's because it DOES apply to them

I think this is a fundamental left/right value split (or liberal/trad value split, or whatever you wanna call it) Rush Limbaugh's horrified "You think *anything* is okay as long as you *consent*" thing

I think the reason for an age of consent is just that, the issue *of consent* - that an adult has so much legal and social power over a minor that a minor cannot meaningfully consent to the consequences of sex with an adult I do NOT think it's a matter of "innocence" and "taint"

A lot of the rhetoric around this presumes that a child is fundamentally "pure", "innocent", basically asexual And that to introduce sexuality into their lives is to "ruin" them, "corrupt" them (the old law is literally called "corruption of minors") I think this is fucked up
