I do, for what it's worth, think two 15-year-olds can consent to sex with each other and their doing so is not that big a deal, and that a lot of this controversy comes from people deliberately saying "children" to mean "all minors"

In fact, Canada explicitly allows close-in-age exemptions down to the age of 12, after age of consent reforms/harmonizing age of consent for gay teens about ten years ago.

Yeah. That makes sense. Teenagers are always going to be sexually active. Statutory rape is for like 21 year olds with 16 year olds. That’s not ok. But two 16 year olds? Or a 17 and 18 year old? That’s perfectly normal.

Yes, though technically all of those examples are legal here. But a 21 year old and a 15 year old? Wow, no, that’s super illegal. As it should be.

The 16 and 21 year old example may be illegal as well, Canada has a clause about sexual exploitation that can render consent invalid. Which is IMO a super important point.

Yes! There are plenty of exceptions: that 21-year-old sure as hell better not be in a position of authority over the 16-year-old, etc.

IMO This is something that doesn't go quite far enough, a 16 year old and 21 year old is obviously dicey, but the same could be said about a 21 year old and a 30 year old.

Yeah, that latter case is creepy, and I'd probably not want to stay friends with that 30-year-old, but I don't think it should be illegal, just subject to social norms: "really, my good friend? you're dating THAT person?! How about not?"

Yeah I think it's obviously inevitable and necessary that we have social norms that put up red flags for situations that are likely to be exploitative but passing laws and using the justice system to police power dynamics among adult couples is a really bad idea

Also, ignoring that there are a LOT of really sketchy power dynamics between couples, or even that a good majority of relationships seem transactional on some level... and that really shouldn't fill up the courts... we have the social norms to do it already.
