And apparently the anti-"enthusiastic consent" people refuse to believe this narrative and think by even bringing the word "consent" into being hugged and kissed by your cheek-pinching grandma we're perverting the innocence of childhood or whatever The disagreeement runs deep

This is relevant to this discussion why? Who is arguing this here?

If minors can't consent to sex, is there anything they can consent to? Can they consent to being touched, or hugged, or picked up off the ground?

This is appalling. How on earth are you comparing tickling or cuddling your child to raping them. This is a seriously sick tweet & should be deleted. Is this the kind of thing you are defending

I'm only comparing it in the sense that you shouldn't fucking do anything to a child (or an adult) they don't want you to do

Well don’t. Cuddling your child is not abuse & absolutely should be done if the child is upset. Sometimes, even when he thinks he doesn’t want it. It’s how we convey empathy without words & is comforting.

There are literally multiple articles that came out during
#MeToo
in 2017 talking about how being forced to hug or cuddle against their will as a young child trained people into the "freezing up" reaction they later repeated when they were sexually assaulted as teens or adults1 reply 3 retweets 41 likes -

I’m fairly new to Twitter so didn’t follow me too that closely so I will take your word for that. However I reiterate a parent cuddling an upset child is normal human behaviour & it is just sick to compare it to rape. You should delete the tweet.

This is EXACTLY what Arthur's been trying to say thia whole time! you're saying that kids DONT GET TO consent *OR* say no to physical contact with family members. Arthur is saying that kids SHOULD be in control of who touches them. And you think Arthur is the problematic one?

Their angle here is saying that if I think children have any capacity to consent it must mean I think they can consent to *anything* and therefore if someone can sweet-talk a six-year-old into having sex with them that's okay That this is where their mind goes is revealing

Anyway, "enthusiastic consent" is specifically about attacking simplistic notions of consent -- "She said yes!" -- in exactly this way "Enthusiastic" may be a misnomer, it's about *informed* and *thoughtful* consent as much as anything else
