Okay so I've read all these articles now and I've concluded that she's a grump who skates on the edge/wrong side of these issues but has probably done more good than bad? All I wanted to do was laugh at comic book nerds getting mad at an old lady.

Yeah I mean she said she made the conscious decision a long time ago to withdraw and no longer be a public figure and just enjoy her money in peace after they made the movie The problem is then they invented Twitter

Twitter ruins us all, but especially celebrities who come to the platform with built-in audiences Like I seriously think JK Rowling wouldn't be a TERF if she didn't have Twitter

right? At least it feels like she NEEDS to win this fight and it's fucking scary. I don't think she'd have ever thought about it at all in her life if it wasn't for twitter.

Like three or four years ago someone did a deep dive onto this, pointing out that JKR promised (as George Lucas did) to withdraw from the Harry Potter series and find other things to do because "it belongs to the fans now" Writing The Casual Vacancy, creating Robert Galbraith

Her slow and steady backsliding on this can be directly traced to her constantly growing engagement with social media Like getting that instant dopamine hit of dropping a bit of HP lore on Twitter and getting 2 million RTs and an article written about it in Buzzfeed

it's been so weird to watch the converse of this process in real time - with Simu Liu the before and after on him getting cast in the MCU has been really bizarre because afterwards when he tweeted basically anything screen rant would do a writeup

If you go even mildly viral you NEED to have some kind of strong social network of rl friends and family (or else, I dunno, just be an uncommonly strong person) because your ability to take social feedback from the Internet itself will be destroyed

There'll be people who praise you to the high heavens for doing shit that costs you nothing, and the shit you pour your heart and soul into will just vanish without a blip The temptation to become a mindlessly Pavlovian like-chaser is enormous

And no matter what bad thing you do you'll have people lining up to defend you for it, no matter how objectively awful it was, and you'll have people jumping down your throat screaming at you, no matter how objectively minor it was So people go crazy

I'm not saying JKR isn't culpable for going crazy, especially since she of any celebrity obviously has every opportunity to live a normal life if she wants and has consciously chosen the Dark Path But still, this is the process by which it happens
