I know someone in CA whose default rule is "If I don't understand it, vote against it, because if it were a good law they would pass it the normal way and not by trying to trick voters into passing it" Unfortunately ballot initiatives are so normalized now it's not a great rulehttps://twitter.com/PolitiCatGrump/status/1316592442238332930 …

*My* pet peeve is vote on absolutely mundane things I thought I elected people to deal with. Example: "Do you want to adjust daylight savings time?" I have no idea why I'm voting on that. I hired you to decide it for me.

People who kind of lazily talk about how in the future we'll have REAL democracy and that'll fix things have clearly never attended an actual "town hall meeting" about anything Either that or they're one of the people who gets really into such meetings and should be avoided

People who think "Politicians are all slimy crooks so we should have a democracy that doesn't have any politicians, just vote on everything!" are one of my least favorite flavor of democracy reformers.

If you want a book that will convince you that direct democracy is a terrible idea, read "Democracy for Realists" which spends three chapters telling us that voters basically play "opposite day" every election cycle. (the book is a great read to feel hopeless about everything).

PJ O'Rourke wrote an whole book about how terrible politicians were, but finished it off by going to a town meeting, which was just as bad.

you have not fully comprehended the wrongness of direct democracy until you have attended a ten-hour town hall occupied primarily by old white people ranting about the evils of the bike lobby
