One thing I never quite got is that if they weren't keeping track how did they determine when the Kalends of March actually was?

By "not keeping track" I just mean they didn't think any of the days in winter were worth giving names to, obviously having a functioning society meant still keeping track of the moon's phases (which is what the months were based on)
