Like, the ancient Romans had a more robust city infrastructure and could spend that time huddled indoors playing games and reading and stuff but maybe peasants in English villages didn't have as many distractions for the winter hornies, idk

Many people have observed the apparent perversity of celebrating love and sex not in the full bloom of spring ("summer is icumen in" etc) but at a time of year when everything is damp and gray and desaturated and you need to huddle close to the fire to keep off the hacking coughs
