Yeah the odds of some white novelist actually getting arrested or even getting a phone call for Googling "How do I blow up the White House" etc will continue to be zero Real people are actually going to get brutalized by cops over real shit because of this policy https://t.co/X8KiFwtUcW

Cops, despite frequent viral news stories to the contrary, aren't completely stupid and they're not gonna come after your middle class gamer ass for edgy Google searches about rocket launchers The point of the keyword pull requests is getting real people in trouble for real shit

The troubling thing about the story is that it's NOT the cartoon thing people are joking about when they act like Google is actually a maximally intrusive overseer from a dystopian novel and is automatically "red flagging" everyone in the country searching the word "drugs"

The whole point is they aren't doing that and can't do that without a lot of well connected people freaking out because they'd be personally affected And doing that would be a lot of WORK - they'd need to hire a ton of people to work a lot of hours to sift through all them all

The reason this story is scary is because it's TARGETED pulls for keywords by geolocation The cops have no interest in arresting everyone who looks up "drugs" or "guns" and they never have

The issue is that the cops can come to Google with a very specific request over something seemingly innocuous with a story that they're trying to catch a specific person and Google will cooperate

Which ought to worry you, because it's exactly the kind of thing well-meaning white people will go along with because it sounds noble "Can you tell us if anyone in this neighborhood is Googling this specific address? We think this lady has a stalker"

What well-meaning middle class person wouldn't want to help the cops if they come with a story like that But the problem is, if you just believe them anytime they tell you something like that without a court order, you've made yourself a tool for them to do anything

One thing that a lot of people don’t understand is that cops are allowed to lie to you.
