Rich people generally understand that their charitable giving is an effective grift, because they get to look good AND don't actually really lose anything. Trump must have thought he found the clever shortcut in just PRETENDING to give.

I keep coming back to how we got so used to dismissing political language and euphemism that simply not using it can be seen as 'straight talking honesty' even when the content is 100% untrue (and trivial to demonstrate as such)

This is my extreme bitterness with Orwell's "Politics and the English Language" and how it in many ways wildly misses the point and has birthed generation after generation of pundits and politicians who also miss the point Hypocritical euphemisms are better than the alternative

They all lie, no euphemisms needed. Trump just does it extremely bad.

Pence lies traditionally by saying "well if you want to talk about the science of climate change, we support science, as you can see in our great coronavirus response that was much better than joe biden's as they sow discontent about vaccines so who's really anti-science?"
-
And trump says "I brought back football, personally, and they want to pour your water into the ocean" It's almost a test of faith
