Fair, though I meant more "how they're reading it" than "what it is." The history of "Harsh Headmaster" figures he's ripped off from were seldom "really" meritocrats either, but I'm assuming "He'll like me if I work harder, this is a test" is part of the fantasy at that point

Hypothesis: Slytherin has an outsized win record in the Quidditch House Cup because they have most of the old rich families who give their kids the best brooms (or in Malfoy's case, all the team). It's like how Harry gets two top of the line brooms as gifts but for a whole team.
