He's a domineering Olde Englishman Schoolteacher who browbeats "the popular kids" out of ruthless commitment to academic meritocracy (but will respect your earned A+'s) and he's a Dark Wizard AND he sad gothboy who could be saved/fixed - I feel like this isn't complicated?https://twitter.com/arthur_affect/status/1314643809288941570 …

Snape does not care about letting students earn his respect, he is a prick who enjoys his power to capriciously reward students he likes and punish students he dislikes, he's a picture of all the *bad* teachers most of us have had For the early books that's his whole role

He straight up does the thing where Hermione gives the right answer, he punished her for speaking out of turn, then he gives Draco points for saying what Hermione just said He's the reason Slytherin wins the House Cup every year because he blatantly cheats

It's the wonder of meritocracy: there's this weird idea that it's okay to be an asshole to someone not living up to your standards, and so when people see someone being an asshole to those they are judging, there's this assumption that "oh, they must be meritocratic!"

Of course, people project that on to real teachers who act like this too. Especially if they're not the target. (Or not consistently the target, anyway)
