Hadestown is good to the extent that it doesn’t do that and fails insofar as it ever edges in that direction imo so I don’t think it disproves the criticism as opposed to functioning as proof it’s possible to do Literally Anything Else

Saw Hadestown on Broadway at the end of February, right before COVID closed down theaters. Possibly the best live musical I've ever seen and a compelling interpretation of the Hades character.

Hadestown plays up some of aspects of Hades usually ignored in pop culture, thought - the whole king of the mines and the wealth dug out of the earth is an aspect that modern takes don't usually go into. It's Hades the plutocrat, pun intended.
