Guys who get obsessively angry about this and segue it into a whole Men's Rights thing are weird and I dislike them But on this issue they're obviously correcthttps://twitter.com/psblyndsay/status/1313894382148280321 …

There is an obvious reason why it should not be banned but yeah it’s absolutely indefensible as a practice in like, actual pediatric medicine

Muslims are a significantly more persecuted religious minority, does that mean we should allow female circumcision?

FGM doesn’t really specifically tie to Islam, though. It’s more cultural, and the hadith that advocate it are of suspect authenticity. That said, I’m all for removing the current form of circumcision from Jewish practice. There’s evidence that it wasn’t always so “total”.

Yup This is a thing, people joke about Michelangelo being so ignorant his nude statue of King David is uncircumcised, but in fact that statue is historically accurate According to Jewish tradition the original form of circumcision really was just "snipping the tip"

Circumcision is referred to in Jewish practice as a multi-stage process, and the first stage, milah, was originally the only stage It was only after the Babylonian exile that the second stage, peri'ah (pulling back the rest of the foreskin and trimming it off) was added

This seems to be because if you just have your tip snipped you can still stretch out your foreskin to look uncircumcised and, in that time period, pass as non-Jewish And rabbis at the time wanted to fight back against cultural assimilation by making this impossible

The real irony about all this is of course that in modern American society full circumcision has been so normalized that it has no relevance to whether people think you're Jewish or not at all

As I recall, the American fixation on it had more to do with discouraging masturbation.

The medical justifications were made post-hoc.
