I mean, it's not like we just bury people anymore. First, we thoroughly poison their corpse, and then we bury it in an airtight box. Or we burn it so thoroughly that we could snort whatever's left through a drinking straw. And that was *before* George Romero!

It's weird, though, because when I've been unable to afford cremation of a pet it turns out they literally just throw them in the trash Surely we could just have a designated landfill for body disposal. $50 to transport a body there or DIY sounds better than what we currently do

That's what the concept of a pauper's grave in a potter's field is, although it's still generally somewhat more expensive than $50 (but if there really is no family at all to send the bill to the city pays for it)
