(My understanding is drive-ins were already "old-fashioned" by like the 1960s, which is why pop culture references to them from the '60s onwards are all wink-wink-nudge-nudge that no one goes to them to actually watch the movie and they're just an excuse to have sex in the car)

My mother and I have already purchased tickets to a special drive-in screening of Frankenstein.

Yeah, the start up costs are a huge pain, especially for a business which may not be viable for more than a year, but I really would’ve thought studios sitting on piles of cash and films they can’t release would’ve done pop-up ones by now at least

There’s a drive in near my house I’ve gone to for years. It’s the superior way to watch movies, this is my one old fashioned opinion and it is correct

My parents' friend who bought a drive-in in the 90s and has kept it operating ever since has been laughing all the way to the bank

I SUPER did. It was one of my first things I thought I could see myself going to soon. Helps that we have a local one already.

Drive-ins are incredible and their demise was a huge loss for humanity. The possibilities for the patrons only just start at the immensity of the screen experience. If they're really coming back I might have to rethink my absolutist position on car culture.

I've gotta wonder, if someone wanted to start a new one, say at a carpark with a convenient wall, how technically difficult would it be? You'd need a projector, obviously. Does the audio connect to the car radio? Can people stream it through their phones?
-
Apparently there's sound companies who do this all the time for one-shot events etc who will set you up to transmit your audio over an FM band and set up a wifi router for people to stream it digitally as part of the same set of services as setting up actual speakers
