Everything from Japan except for games made by Nintendo, one of the most rapaciously capitalist and exploitative media companies in Japan

Nintendo is a giant megacorporation that literally sets up storefronts just to shill endless quantities of their fucking merch and has singlehandedly pushed lawsuit after lawsuit to make IP law harsher and crush competitors But oh no the Type Moon guys have awkward fetishes

I don't even want to know what bizarre mental gymnastics these people went through to somehow decide the Doom franchise is fundamentally "more leftist" than Call of Duty (I mean I hate the turn toward "realistic military" shooters too but get a fucking grip you people)

Ah yes the ultra-leftist Halo games, where the protagonist is a child kidnapped by the military for experimental, extremely dangerous medical augmentation to be trained as a soldier (as a child, remember), and that's just... Basically cool, outside of one trilogy of books.

My nuclear take is ANY setting that makes a big deal out of humans being embattled underdogs against a horde of monsters -- and never questioning or problematizing this -- can easily be turned into a right-wing metaphor Which is why calling Halo and TWD "leftist" is kinda yikes

I mean Doom is very self-aware about just being a pure right-wing purity/annihilation narrative "They're all corrupt, they're all infested with sin, rip and tear and rip and tear until none remain" They turned it up to the point of self-parody I guess that makes it "leftist"?

Doom also has an anti-corporate/environmentalist message, tbf. The whole thing about the boss saying "it was worth it" while you're staring at a dead person is... Very on the nose. And repeated like 20473623 times. (No idea if Doom Eternal changes that. The trailers made me oof.)

one of the LOVE DEATH AND ROBOTS shorts is just so obviously a white nationalist homesteader fantasy, with hordes of mindless black bugs substituted in for immigrants once you see the pure type it's easy to identify the many more subtle versions

I can see how someone could concieve of Halo as being more left-leaning than others if they siezed on "you're fighting a fanatical group of religious zealots who (at least in Halo 2) are being manipulated into their own destruction!" and ignored literally the rest of the plot.

Yeah except when Halo 1 actually came out this was an obvious metaphor for the War on Terror

I think it was @sellybeth told me that when the prevalent narrative is rightwing you get zombie movies (hordes of dirty people coming for your stuff) & when it's leftwing this get vampire stories (old men in castles living off your blood). I think about that a lot

Enh As @loudpenitent keeps bringing up, the "left-wing populism" in vampire narratives turns antisemitic pretty easily, it's literally the blood libel

What I find interesting though is that there are a lot, and I mean A LOT, of BL webnovels that are set in zombie apocalypse scenarios, but I guess those are less about mowing down the horde of "filthy zombies" and more about trying to find a safe heaven in a hostile environment
