Okay so the nominee for a Family Court Judge position is uncontested, there's no Republican candidate and the Democratic candidate is also nominated by the Conservative and Independence parties So fuck that woman whoever she is I need a new job so I'm going to write myself in

I mean I feel okay writing MYSELF in because I am completely certain of my own willingness to accept the office

Unfortunately, since you have provided no indication of this willingness to the New York Secretary of State prior to the commencement of early voting, you are an "unqualified write-in candidate" and your vote will simply be discarded

But yeah protesting that is legit As @Cybren has pointed out before judiciary elections are super sketch and people who end up running for a seat uncontested have usually strategized in order to be able to do so

And are often people who are specifically taking the election route because they're too unpopular or unqualified to get an appointment

I do not see any reason to believe direct judicial elections are less corrupt than indirect ones (ie appointment by directly elected politicians). I mean, the GOP federal judicial caucus is more corrupt and political than the (elected) Pennsylvania Supreme Court by far

I mean once you get a single person sent to prison because the judge is worried about rejection for being perceived of as soft on crime...

Yeah I mean the reason we don't just make judges a normal elected position that everyone has to run for in general is the perception that the judiciary should be insulated from politics Getting someone hanged because everyone hates them and it's what the voters want, etc

So even now we do in fact sharply limit (partially by law partially by tradition) how much "campaigning" you can do as a judicial candidate You're not supposed to talk about specific cases, you're not supposed to outright tell people how you'd rule in this or that situation

Judicial elections are this weird limbo where we don't REALLY want the courts to be run as an actual popular democracy but we think we should have a little, as a treat (as a check against the threat of judicial tyranny or whatever)

And weird limbos are annoying and lead to perverse outcomes Everyone got mad that bagel lady in LA becomes a judge but that's what happens when you have a whole set of elections you just expect most normal uninformed people not to vote in
