Because the Electoral College is an ancient institution from before they really thought about these things I don't think they have a solution for this

I mean, this is really more of an issue with the present-day system of ballots and write-in candidates, though the real answer is obviously "they don't expect candidates who are not on the ballot to win under any circumstances, certainly not for President".

Yeah I mean it's funny that they apparently still cast their vote by just personally writing a name on a piece of paper

Imagine a situation where the two major party nominees had names that were really similar and off by only one letter

Oh, I think we're talking about two different things - I'm not talking about write-in votes *by* electors, I'm talking about who becomes electors in the event that a write-in candidate for president wins the general election.

Oh, okay Yeah you'd be expected to have your own system in place to appoint electors on a state-by-state level, if you were an independent I guess it's one of the many big barriers to running as an independent

I finally looked it up - in New York, at least, you have to name all the elector-candidates and attach their pledges to your certificate of candidacy - https://www.elections.ny.gov/NYSBOE/download/law/certificateofcandidacy.pdf … I guess that's another answer to why not just have free-for-all write-ins.

Yeah I vaguely remember in the Ross Perot years, when his "party" was just him, he was paying for advertisements to get people to sign up to be his electors in all 50 states
