My absentee ballot came in the mail Since I'm in a blue county in a solidly blue state—one I'm about to functionally get priced out of, almost certainly never to return—I'm almost tempted not to vote out of pure bitterness but *sigh* I guess Westchester can profit at my expense
But most states have laws saying the minimum qualification to have your votes counted at all should be somewhat lower than being on the ballot To be a "qualified write-in candidate" you just need to send a letter telling them you're running before the election

Because they only want to count votes for which they have verification the name corresponds to a real person who would actually take the office if they were elected As opposed to voting for "South Park"
-
This is also a practical issue to deal with duplicate names, name typos, etc. -- it simplifies vote-counting issues a great deal if you only have to deal with comparing the written-in name with a list of names of qualified candidates than counting *everything* someone could write

back to the topic of the electoral college who are the electors if a write-in candidate wins? do you have to nominate them in your qualified write-in letter?
-
can you declare yourself as a write-in candidate for elector rather than for president? do you have to get enough people together to make up a whole slate?
