Saw on FB a discussion among evangelical Republicans that they're waiting to vote until Election Day because if Trump dies they're definitely voting for Pence but otherwise they're in a quandary I'm ok with this

In this case, if Trump dies, there's a pretty high chance they'll just fuck Pence over, looking at the chatter from Team Trump Like there's no actual rule Pence would be the candidate in the November election, they could just keep him the VP candidate and put Ivanka in above him
-
Becoming the "interim President" between November and January only to be immediately demoted back to VP again would be a unique humiliation few other politicians can say they've endured And therefore one I'm sure Mr. Pence welcomes with the same odd enthusiasm he always does

What exactly does it mean to be a pledged elector (AIUI different states have different degrees of enforcement, but it's not clear to me who can, except in the case of the nominee actually dying, release them from it)
-
Yeah the definition of a pledged elector is you're a party operative -- officially an elected official of the party, you "run for election" on the actual ballot regular people get in November -- and you sign a contract to vote for who the party tells you to

Can they though? Its not at all up to the states? If Trump dies Nov 1st & the Reps decide to replace him w/ Pence, are all the votes counted until then (could be a healthy amount) not going to ''Trump'', regardless? The constitution doesn't mention parties after all.
-
The Constitution doesn't mention citizens voting for the President at all, and indeed we do not vote for the President We vote for slates of "pledged electors" in the Electoral College, and *they're* the ones who vote for the President

Of course that is a situation ripe for a faithless elector, the elector is ultimately a person and makes there decisions and there is currently a legal challenge trying to eliminate the already paltry legal consequences for not voting the way you were promised to
