Codex Alera *sorta* does this - Tavi grows up with effectively no magical ability at all, and it does cause him a LOT of trouble in a society where magic is used for nearly everything... Even though he learns how to use magic eventually, going w/o shapes his worldview a lot.

It teaches him mostly to actually approach problems as a bit more of an engineer/nerd, which is the obvious nerd power fantasy, but it ALSO encourages him to take an empathetic & non-traditional approach to diplomacy a lot rather than swinging his wizard-dick around to dominate.

Which I actually found a lot more interesting - sure, Tavi pulls off a few Code Geass bullshit Gimmick Victories at various books' climaxes, but the BIG thing, the really big thing, is he has to learn how to think outside the box of his hidebound conservative society.

Although, what always struck me as kinda hilarious? A standard Ancient Roman trebuchet is depicted as an advanced WMD, and Tavi proposing they bring this back is initially *laughed off* by everyone. Up until there's an invasion of the Not!Zerg.

Yeah! Because nobody's used to thinking in terms of *devices* anymore! It's all waving around your magic-dick and yelling I AM BIGGEST AND STRONGEST and the catapults end up being an implicit "fuck you, we don't NEED big magic to have a voice"

I remember someone even mentions in their POV that re-introducing siege weapons would, even if there wasn't an invasion of the Not!Zerg, irrevocably alter the playing field between magic users and normals.

Yeah, exactly, it's great! Side note: Alera *actually* does at least the beginnings of "yeah the corrupt old magocracy is being torn down and the protagonists are building something new and diverse," and even has elements of "maybe not all endings are totally happy" w/Crassus.

It's been awhile, but Crassus was the guy who initially betrayed the heroes at the beginning of the series, was a recurring villain, but then kinda pulled a heel-face turn? I remember in a post-series interview Jim Butcher implied he'd play a hermetic "Yoda-like" role.

Fidelias - another surprisingly great character! man I have good memories of Alera, it was just Butcher firing on all cylinders a lot and avoiding a lot of the shit Dresden Files just plunges into.

His name is memorable because it's ironic (because the first thing he does in the books is turn traitor) Also it's really obviously not a name, it's an alias, and we never find out his actual name

TBF, it's implied it's a title-name, of the sort Romans would take based on their achievements?

Of course, his other name, Valiar Marcus, is *also* an alias and cognomen based on his achievements. So we have literally no idea who Fidelias "really" is, beyond vague hints - he's presumably a frontier kid bc his furies take manifest form and have names instead of particles.
