Mages don't have to be played as assholes and they blew up the setting in Revised to make being an asshole Mage a lot harder but it's just that in the meta context we're talking about they come off a LOT like the "fans are slans" stereotype

"Slan" was an old school science fiction story about genetic mutants who were superintelligent and destined to replace normal humans, "fans are slans" was a notorious in-joke from the era about the whole idea of "nerd supremacy"

i kinda get what you mean i guess i never saw it that way because , from what i read the main interaction with normal folks is just hiding from them with most of the opposition coming from other mages, so i never really saw them as a threat to normal people

or really like, something that would matter to normal people at all, to be quite honest. Cuz like, their entire thing is "my powers don't work around normal people" so even if they weren't hiding from the wizard cops they'd still be off in a hole not bothering anyone

Enh A lot of the more activist Tradition Mages are activist in that they actively want to change the Consensus so they can have more direct power to do stuff in the everyday world, with no concern for how this would affect normal people

And a lot of the more passive ones are still offensive in the way Harry Potter wizards are, in hindsight, offensive Hoarding power with no sense of responsibility to Muggle society to use it to benefit others Only interacting with Muggles to get them out of your way

One big theme of Hunter is that the mind control and memory wiping stuff is in fact really really bad, like this really deep fundamental violation of self to the point that "mind rape" is not really a hyperbolic term to use And the other gamelines are way too casual with it

Hence the core power all Hunters have, the Second Sight, specifically makes you immune to it

*nods* Can't really disagree on that I would argue that it's not irresponsible for them to not use their powers to help people though, simply because if they're helping people in any noticeable way, then paradox, etc, powers stop working, and so on.

Sure, well The whole debate over what Mages should be doing with their powers was kind of why Revised happened, and why the Revised core book straight up told you that Ascension was out of reach now, maybe permanently, because of the Avatar Storm

And since you're stuck here on Earth permanently now and have no hope of earning your way up to flying through magical outer space with the Archmages maybe you should try to think about coexisting with your neighbors

Finding ways to actually help Muggles once in a while instead of just whining that Paradox makes it haaaaaard
