The smug billionaire prick realizing that all the money that exists as 1s and 0s in a faraway computer and all the complex knowledge of law and finance he's spent a lifetime accumulating means jack shit when all the little people start physically rushing the door to his mansion

@RuffleJax talked about how the Bay Area techbro rationalist community is in love with Mage: the Ascension and their private Discord server is named "Doissetep" after the Chantry of the Order of Hermes And wow that analogy just makes me appreciate Hunter: the Reckoning so much3 replies 1 retweet 16 likes -

I loved Mage but yeah, this is definitely a problem. And it's not hard at all to see why these assholes love it since that is what appealed to teenage me too: the idea you are a special extra smart person who sees reality clearly while everyone else is asleep.

Hell in the Technocracy books they even call your special magic stat "Genius".

Hunter: the Reckoning was a lot of different things that didn't fit that well together necessarily, and a lot of its defenders talk about how the Zeal Creeds and the "hobo with a shotgun" signature characters didn't give a full picture of it But I liked that stuff

As a fan of the Zeal Creeds and what they're about, I'll say -- Of course they're hypocrites and Hunters were just as "supernatural" as any other White Wolf gameline and they had their own kind of "magic" But it is in fact the kind of "magic" that matters

Hunters aren't special because they're smart, because of their Arete or Genius, or because they're spiritual and wise (Gnosis), or because of their literal bloodline (Generation) The idea of H:tR Hunters, the Imbued, is you became special because someone hurt you

Does that make Changeling: the Lost more of a successor to HtR than Vigil?

The Dauntain, the Changeling: the Dreaming "bad guys", were fleshed out in their Year of the Hunter supplement in 1995, and revisited by the Hunter: First Contact book where the Imbued are an excuse to also check in on how all those other kinds of hunters were doing

And the Dauntain themselves were really really reminiscent of the Changeling: the Lost changelings, like they were almost a prototype Hunter: First Contact letting us get a hint of the perspective flip where the Dauntain are the heroes may have been a seed for C:tL

The whole point of H:tR (which the Imbued themselves as characters were hypocrites about, but who isn't) is that all of these WoD gamelines were about people who think they're really special and important and who fuck over a *whole lot* of regular ordinary people along the way

And Hunter was about how sometimes unexpectedly one of those people suddenly snaps out of their stupor and punches you in the face And if you combine that with the possibly unconscious self-crit of how obnoxious the tone of The Autumn People was you get 95% of the way to C:tL
