Mmm, beg to differ. The best fanfic writers take themselves (as writers), and their fic, very seriously. This isn’t by itself a recipe for writing terrific fic. But it’s almost always a factor.

Yeah, i concur. You're off the mark on this one, Arthur!

"Take themselves too seriously" is, perhaps, the wrong word for what I meant There's a certain "magic circle" concept I feel like all of my interactions with fandom involve, a level of "I know I'm asking you to accept something other people would find silly"

It doesn't mean not taking *the work* or the *quality* of the writing seriously, but it means, to me, a certain level of humility in the relationship with the reader It's hard to put into words but the thing I mean is something I know early JKR had and current JKR sorely lacks

That's fair. You probably do need better words though :)

LOL, well speaking of what she's lacking, I've felt it as well. I think that, first, she's desperately trying to hold on to what she had. What made the original series of books "good" in the first place. When the original series of books ended, she should have just stopped.

Even the original books aren't *good*, in a lot of salient respects, but the first three (before she got too big to edit) are at least *trying* something, you know? The rest of them aren't even that.

That's true. And they're also not all that original. I mean, does anyone remember the movie and TV series The Worst Witch? Anyway, I think this is the one case where the movies are far better than the source material. I'm more of a Potter movie person.

Hah. And we're in a conversation, right here on Twitter, with Diane Duane, whose books about teenage wizards were groundbreaking MANY years before Harry Potter. And a HELL of a lot better written!

(Seriously, the first two books in that series are fundamental to my adult personhood, and i am not overstating the case.)

Yes, agreed, it's because I was such a fan of Young Wizards (which I read before I even read Earthsea) that I was so initially resistant to the overgushing praise of Harry Potter

So much of Harry Potter still feels like it's about the hype. It's kind of the same with Star Wars. Which is probably why they can keep fan interested in the franchise despite so many disappointments.
