Yeah a big part of JK Rowling going off the rails was how the Fantastic Beasts movies are her trying to be taken seriously doing gritty adult material -- making the Harry Potter universe deal with sex, politics, the Holocaust, etc. -- and people generally not buying ithttps://twitter.com/ErrantNerd/status/1313010045789982720 …

I was actually interested in the first movie... until I realized it was more expanded universe bait than just a fun romp with a wizard from the past.

I liked the parts that were just magical creatures and baked goods with 1920s costumes, then they had to add all the convoluted politics stuff, never bothered with the second one because it seemed to play into the second more than the first

It's not like politics is something I don't enjoy in other things, but it just never started making sense in the movie, lets go back to stick creatures in speakeasies

That's the whole thing -- it's not like doing Serious Adult Shit in Harry Potter is impossible at all The vast majority of "Harry Potter fandom" online at this point is plugged into doing EXACTLY THAT It's just that JKR's own efforts at it suck ass

Partly because JKR doing it herself lacks the certain flavor of detachment and irony the act of "writing Harry Potter fanfic" inherently carries -- the fact that you *can't* take yourself too seriously while being a fanfic writer But also she just objectively sucks and is bad

Mmm, beg to differ. The best fanfic writers take themselves (as writers), and their fic, very seriously. This isn’t by itself a recipe for writing terrific fic. But it’s almost always a factor.

"Take themselves too seriously" is, perhaps, the wrong word for what I meant There's a certain "magic circle" concept I feel like all of my interactions with fandom involve, a level of "I know I'm asking you to accept something other people would find silly"

It doesn't mean not taking *the work* or the *quality* of the writing seriously, but it means, to me, a certain level of humility in the relationship with the reader It's hard to put into words but the thing I mean is something I know early JKR had and current JKR sorely lacks

But like, when I supposedly went off on an "obsessive" rant about the origin of "Alohomora" etc. -- Some people might think caring a lot about not misusing a word from another culture is "taking yourself too seriously" What I meant by what I said is the opposite

Like, to me, the kind of "taking yourself too seriously" I mean is getting really pissed off that other people questioned your research and angrily blustering that, as the bestselling famous author here, you have the right to define what words mean in your universe

It might be that a different idiom would work better when trying to describe this kind of thing, as “too seriously” implies a defect in the seriousness level. Whereas reacting badly to / blustering over the problem being mooted suggests a creator not being serious *enough.*
