I liked the parts that were just magical creatures and baked goods with 1920s costumes, then they had to add all the convoluted politics stuff, never bothered with the second one because it seemed to play into the second more than the first

That's the whole thing -- it's not like doing Serious Adult Shit in Harry Potter is impossible at all The vast majority of "Harry Potter fandom" online at this point is plugged into doing EXACTLY THAT It's just that JKR's own efforts at it suck ass

Partly because JKR doing it herself lacks the certain flavor of detachment and irony the act of "writing Harry Potter fanfic" inherently carries -- the fact that you *can't* take yourself too seriously while being a fanfic writer But also she just objectively sucks and is bad

Like writing a *good* Harry Potter fanfic that actually had to be canon and that you could give to WB to make a big-budget movie out of would be really hard You'd have to make all these compromises most fanfic writers would chafe at But hell I could still do it better than her
