Arthur Chu Retweeted The Nerd Errant

Yeah a big part of JK Rowling going off the rails was how the Fantastic Beasts movies are her trying to be taken seriously doing gritty adult material -- making the Harry Potter universe deal with sex, politics, the Holocaust, etc. -- and people generally not buying ithttps://twitter.com/ErrantNerd/status/1313010045789982720 …

I was actually interested in the first movie... until I realized it was more expanded universe bait than just a fun romp with a wizard from the past.

Same thing with the Cormoran Strike books, which likewise feel very "We Demand To Be Taken Seriously" "I am NOT just the wizard book lady, I have Important Opinions"

Tbh I almost might like Fantastic Beasts better if they fully committed to it, like if it were an R-rated franchise instead of PG-13 Just full-on blood, gore, swearing, wizard sex, lay it on us I'm contemptuous of it partly because I know she'd never ever do that

Fantastic Beasts 2 *invokes* the Holocaust, it *shows images related to the Holocaust*, but it isn't actually *about* the Holocaust, it never specifically names the thing it's talking about when talking about no-maj atrocities and hatred etc. And that's fucking shitty

Closest you can come EVEN NOW to just saying Dumbledore and Grindelwald fucked is the "Closer than brothers" line But then in interviews you're all "Oh yeah they totally had an 'intense sexual relationship'" This was the stuff everyone mocked you for before the TERF thing Jo

And the last two Avengers movies had pretty dark themes, but kept the balance and remembered they were action-adventures first.

I mean, "how seriously do you want to take the setting as you've already established it" is a real problem. Like with Batman, the two extremes are "the Adam West series" and "A billionaire beats up the mentally ill for fun."

I liked the parts that were just magical creatures and baked goods with 1920s costumes, then they had to add all the convoluted politics stuff, never bothered with the second one because it seemed to play into the second more than the first

It's not like politics is something I don't enjoy in other things, but it just never started making sense in the movie, lets go back to stick creatures in speakeasies
