You know I'd even go so far as to straight up say that as an Asian person I am personally completely fine with that joke, in isolation The ridiculously over the top use of the "Asian chord" and "domo arigato" etc followed by "BITCH I AIN'T CHO CHANG" is actually pretty perfect

(The incredible hypocrisy of Ron immediately following this with "RACIST SISTER!" *smack* is the whole energy of AVPM in a nutshell)

The problem is what Lytle pointed out, that this is a full length musical, and the way they chose to do it, *after* this joke is over, Devin-Lytle-as-Cho continues to be a main character and Sango-Tajima-as-Lavender gets demoted to an extra

And that is reflecting something genuinely problematic tbh, that the Starkid crew was pretty damn white (Darren Criss being hapa notwithstanding) and Devin Lytle was more in their inner circle than Sango Tajima was so Sango got the bit part

Devin Lytle points out the irony that Sango's improvised delivery of "BITCH I AIN'T CHO CHANG" is amazingly funny and is what makes the whole joke work but people remember Lytle's reveal as the "real Cho Chang" much more clearly, because she's the Starkid token hot girl

Which is a bunch of problematic stuff all wrapped up in a little ball, yes (like Lytle saying that her earlier roles with them really were just her being the hot girl and it took them a while to find a comedic voice for her)

Anyway it's also ironic on the level that Sango Tajima is a really accomplished stage actress and probably also had a much smaller part in AVPM because she was busy with real stuff Devin Lytle probably feels weird about this whole leapfrog nature of becoming "Internet famous"

Like Darren Criss has made comments about how much he personally enjoys that "Team Starkid" got this massive following as Internet celebrities when the actual UMich Theatre Department kind of saw them as weird losers

Like that's the joke with Tyler Brunsman, who wasn't really a core part of their crew because he was an actual star student and Broadway triple threat That's the whole joke of having him play Cedric Diggory

So they can kill him off and then do the big singing and dancing Act 1 finale with him lying motionless as a corpse the whole time Then bring him back as Fudge as Act 2, only to once more kill him and have a big dance number with his motionless corpse

AVPM was really only intended as a college show to start with and a lot of the stuff in it is in-jokes even the cast themselves no longer remember the full context of

But a LOT of the casting was intentionally "ironic" casting, like for the audience "Oh God they made Devin be Cho Chang because she plays the hot girl in ALL their shows, Sango was never even really gonna be in it" was, itself, the joke
