Man you'd think the fact that *I had a girlfriend* would be more affirming to my masculinity than the fact my nails were painted were damaging to it You'd think he'd just be happy about that, given what I was like otherwise I certainly was at the time

this might be a weird thing, but the first part where they talk about abolishing femininity -that IS actually radical feminism- a lot of performative femininity requires labor- and most of it sucks lol. The argument goes off the rails after that but...that part is true, I think.

It seems like there's a conflation in her argument of "things used as excuses to shame people" and "things that harm people." It's the shaming that makes the performative stuff harmful, I think, not the labor itself?

No - the fact that we have to do the labor at all is harmful. What you’re saying is not what I meant. I mean the fact that we are obliged to perform femininity or else we can’t get jobs or go to the gym and be safe or whatever.

Bearded ladies are/were a sideshow at the circus- loads of women have beards and mustaches- but they have to shave or get laser (thousands of dollars) because of stupid gender norms and weird hang ups about normal body hair

Women who wear makeup get paid more than women who don’t. The more attractive you are in high school, the better your grades are. It’s not a fucking choice for most of us. Girls start shaving and waxing their legs at age 9.

Have you ever seen a woman with unshaved legs wear a skirt in a professional office space?

That’s labor and thousands of dollars on waxing or shaving or laser lol and it fucking sucks!!!

Like femininity is pretty oppressive and anyone who doesn’t believe that- doesn’t understand how much it fucking costs to be a woman, how much labor is involved, how unsafe it is to present as a woman somewhere and to be alone- and how patriarchal “femininity” is at its core

Obviously we need to fuck up the gender binary and let everyone do whatever they want- but until women are allowed to be anything but hairless young-looking “feminine” women in most professional environments it’ll never be comparable to a cis man wearing nail polish imo

I'm not trying to make a Girl Power argument that "the existence of makeup and the culture around it is all good and fine and should be celebrated because it makes people happy"

I am saying that when these valid critiques get extrapolated into telling a little boy innocently putting on nail polish because he likes how it looks that he is doing harm and needs to be educated about that harm, something has gone off the rails
